Are Alcohol-Based Sanitisers Bad For You?
It seems that no matter what we do or where we go these days, we can’t escape harsh, alcohol-based sanitisers. It has been found that benzene may cause certain types of cancer in humans. Acetaldehyde and acetal can irritate the upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin and may even cause cancers, serious illness or death. From 2011 – 2015, U.S. poison control centers received nearly 85,000 calls about hand sanitizer exposures among children.
In response to the growing concern behind daily exposure to the harsh chemicals in standard sanitisers, The World Alliance for Patient Safety through its Global Patient Safety Challenge program has established a task force of experts to address and to research and verify the potential consequences of alcohol in daily topical use. Some specific studies have looked at the inhalation of alcohol and this has resulted in some countries reviewing its use.
